Chapter 2

I pointed my torch and there he was, a man lying in the pool of his blood.

“Sir what happened to you, what’s your name, and who did this to you?”

I asked as I knelt by him. He was severely beaten with bruises all over his body.

His right arm was broken, his left leg was fractured as well and his face was swollen.

Even though he was badly injured, I could tell that he wanted to say something to me.

I took out my handkerchief and wiped off the blood that was on his face and there lay a handsome

young man under his blood-stained face.

He was tall and slim with a nicely built body like that of an athlete.

His hair was grey and his brows brown. He had an outstanding pair of lips with a sharp German nose that

could pierce one’s face.

I looked at him closer and asked, “Can you hear me, sir?” He wasn’t responding to me and his pulses

were getting lost.

I stood up in confusion and I didn’t know what to do.

I ran to the road to see if someone was coming, but the road was as empty as a desert with no signs of

cars passing anytime soon.

“Was I going to leave that stranger there to die?”

I asked myself with no possible answer.

“Sir, you need to say something, just say anything that might help me to locate your family.”

I cried out. He tried lifting his hand as though he wanted to point sat something, then his hand dropped

and he collapsed. I was terrified as I shook him countless times with so much fear in me.

“Sir please wake up, you can’t die on me please,” I cried out in despair.

I tried searching his pockets to see if I could find anything tangible that could lead me to his family or

friends but I found nothing.

He had no wallet on him, and no cell phone address.

I searched again thinking I could find a complementary card or restaurant or hotel card on him but I

found nothing.

I think those who battered this man must have taken everything on him so that, there will be no means

of identifying him when he’s found.

I remembered how I was rescued countless times from death and delinquents on the streets so how

could I leave this man here in this kind of condition?

My God gives me strength because I don’t know what to do at this point.

I will go look for help sir don’t worry you will be fine,” I said to him.

I took out the scarf on my head and tried his broken arm while I went around looking for help.

I started walking confused in the night but there was no one.

I saw some people coming my way so I stopped them.

“Please help me there’s a man over there lying lifeless and he needs to be taken to the hospital,”

I pleaded.

“Get out of my sight your hobo, I know the likes of you,”

He said as he continued his way with his friends.

I realized that they too were drunk. I suddenly recalled that I could use my phone to call for an

ambulance or my friends since some of them were still at the Tavern.

I hurriedly took out my phone and it was 3 am already.

I had to dial Dickson’s number, but I had a low battery so my phone went off.

I was mad with rage that I stood there desperate and not knowing what to do.

Rougeburg was a busy street but at such time it was usually empty.

I rushed back to check on the man and I notice that he was still alive but his pulse was too low.

“Lord please give me the vitality to save this stranger,” I prayed in my heart.

I couldn’t understand why I was in that position but I knew that I had to help the man by all possible

means.

I looked at him and tears ran down my cheeks as I recollected how my mum was in an almost identical

situation but had no one to help her.

“Mommy, I am doing this for you and all the helpless people out there in a similar situation like this,” I

murmured.

My courage was boosted and as I was thinking about how to transport him to a nearby hospital, I saw

the flashlight of a car.

I rushed to do the road to see if what I was thinking was real and yes, there was a car coming in our

direction.

I stood in the middle of the road waving my hand with hopes of the conductor stops.

As the car approached I waved more but I realized that the conductor wasn’t slowing down so I had to

give way for him to pass.

“Jesus Christ he almost crushed me,” I mumbled as I got up and wiped off.

I went back to the stranger and watched after him praying in my heart that he should be fine.

“What am I going to do now, I can’t seem to find any guard on this street tonight.

What could he have done to merit this kind of beating that has disfigured him this badly?”

I asked myself. I just had to wait for another car to approach us or for someone to pass by and help me.

I couldn’t stop but wonder how long he was going to hold on before I finally see a car.

I thought of pulling him to the road but his weight wouldn’t even permit me to move a part of his body.

I sat there wondering what was going to happen next without any possible clue, won’t I noticed another

flashlight from a car approaching and I was determined to make this one-stop.

So I went out on the road again running towards the car and screaming,

“Please stop the car it’s an emergency.” Was the car going to stop? That was something I wish happens

because the stranger had not had much time to live and I was getting more scared.
