The Hawthorne Estate.

Mara had just stepped out of the shower when she heard a familiar notification ping from Twitter.

Thinking it was a message from Ethan—since back when Faye was still around, they used Twitter for secret chats—Mara casually picked up her phone and tapped into her DMs.

A new message.

From: @PrincessOfHerOwn My dearest sister, I’m climbing out of hell to drag you and Ethan down with me.

“Ah—!” Mara shrieked in horror, her face instantly drained of color. She stumbled and fell off the chair in panic.

It felt like Faye was literally about to crawl out of the screen. In a panic, she hurled the phone across the room.

Her heart clenched like something invisible had gripped it tight. She couldn’t breathe. Her whole body trembled.

Bang!

The door flew open with a crash, scaring Mara all over again.

“Mara! What happened? Are you okay?” Ethan rushed to her side, gripping her shoulders tightly with worry all over hi
