“Miss Taylor, is something wrong?” Charlotte blinked, her tone calm but distant. She was grateful Cassandra had stood up for her earlier, but she didn’t show it much.

“Why?” Cassandra asked, clearly worked up. The question had been bugging her all afternoon. “Why did you leave the Hawthorne family and end up working here?”
