The sunset blazed like fire.

Cassandra got home from school just in time to see Alexander coming downstairs.

“Grandpa,” she called out.

“Sweetheart, that violin’s already in your room,” he said while slowly making his way down, gripping the banister. Then his tone shifted slightly. “But I gotta ask—who gave you that violin?”

Anyone handing out something that pricey upfront—definitely not your average person.

His granddaughter was still young and inexperienced. He had to look out for her, just in case she got hurt.

Cassandra felt her head ache. How was she supposed to explain this?

After a pause, she decided to be honest—a secret like this would get out eventually anyway. So she lowered her head and said, “It was Damien.”

Alexander’s eyes, clouded with age but still sharp, flickered with surprise. His brows knitted together; he wasn’t exactly thrilled by the name.

He asked, “How did you even meet him?”

“He came to talk to me
