Lilah listened to Violet’ seemingly polite yet loaded remarks with a faint smile. “If you put it that way, Violet, I’ve gotta disagree. My husband’s always busy, yeah, but he still makes time for our kid every single day. You’re right, I love my child dearly, but that doesn’t mean Gabriel’s efforts don’t count. The fact our kid turned out great—that’s on both of us.”

Her words clearly came with a purpose, as if she was intentionally clarifying things for Gabriel.

Violet quickly responded, “Oh, no, I would never discount Mr. Wallace’s involvement—I just meant you two are a classic team—he handles the outside, you manage the home. Perfect balance.”

Gabriel usually stayed out of women’s conversations, but hearing that, he finally spoke up, tone calm yet firm. “There’s no ‘inside’ or ‘outside’ between us. We face everything side by side.”

Before Violet could react, he took Lilah’s hand and led her toward the elevated platform of the banquet hall.
