Lilah had just left in the driver’s car when a sleek black Bentley rolled into the neighborhood and came to a silent stop across from Clara’s building. From that spot, the balcony of Clara’s apartment could just be seen. The space was empty, save for a few potted plants swaying slightly in the breeze—Clara had caught a chill lately and avoided stepping outside. Inside the car, the man rolled down the window. His gaze was fixed on the balcony, eyes deep and unreadable, emotions flickering across his usually indifferent face. He said nothing.

After dinner, Lilah played with Aiden in his room for a while before her phone rang. It was a call from Gabriel’s mother. Lisa was checking in about Gabriel’s upcoming birthday—asking what Lilah had planned. With just a few days left, Lilah explained that Gabriel had already decided the celebration would be a low-key gathering at Ashbourne Manor, just close friends and family. Lisa sounded fine with that and didn’t press further.<
