Rex POV

I stared at the barrier longer than I should have, but nothing stirred in me, no matter how hard I tried. The harder I pushed, the more impossible it felt. Maybe I was reaching too high, thinking I could do this at all.

Zane had been at it for nearly thirty minutes, and even with his strength, he’d only managed to make the smallest crack. I should’ve been beside him, helping, but I hadn’t been able to do a thing.

“Take a break already,” Aries called out.

Zane stopped, turning back to us. Sweat trickled down his chin, exhaustion plain on his face. He nodded and immediately made his way to Rose’s side with a weak smile, while I stayed rooted, staring at the shimmering space.

I felt Aries step up beside me, silent at first, his gaze fixed forward like mine.
