Ayana’s POV
“What kind of a deal?” I implore.
“They will stay off your case and stop bothering you, only if I try to win you over. If they don’t see me doing anything, they will bother you, and I don’t want that. I am the reason why you had to leave your home, why there is this great rift between you and your family, and the reason why your life is messed up right now. I wouldn’t want to cause you more stress and pain, Ayana.” His tone drips with sincerity that causes an adrenaline rush down my spine.
He is not supposed to care this much. He is not supposed to do all this for me. Then why is he taking trouble? Why is he getting too entangled in my mess instead of running away from this web?
“Why exactly are you doing this?” I say, more thinking out loud than asking. It was a whisper that, unbeknownst to me, crept into his ears. I had forgotten that we are so close, and the fact that we are drinking each other’s breath does not help much.
