Chapter 67. For Zayaʼs Sake
“Hello, ma’am.” The pediatrician I had seen earlier greeted me.
I stood up from the couch immediately. “Is everything okay?”
“Yes, she’s stabilizing, so the operation will begin soon.”
“Now?” I asked, fear gripping me.
“Yes. We can’t wait any longer. We need to extract the drugs from her body, or things might get worse.”
“I want to see her before the operation.”
“I’m afraid—”
“Doctor, please.” My voice broke.
She nodded. “Alright. But only for a moment.”
I followed her through the white double doors into the CCU. My breath trembled as I approached Zaya’s small body. She looked so tiny, so fragile, surrounded by wires and machines that beeped in slow rhythm.
