Maybe that was why he was so focused when she had trouble; he took on one thing at a time whereas she kept looking at the whole big picture and essentially freezing instead of acting. The idea of escape, as a whole, seemed insurmountable. Cooperating, getting through their days and eventually being released, just like everyone else, was easier.
