Chapter 46

Forty minutes later, I am helping Theo and Marcus pack the car, while Harlan walks the perimeter with David, going over their plans one last time. Once Theo makes his teasing comment about me “using my magic to reset the angry boss,” the conversation between the guys and me goes back to normal, as though the last forty-eight hours never really happened. For a second, I almost forget myself, until David and Harlan come back, meeting me by the safe house door. Harlan is carrying a duffel bag and looking at me a little weirdly. Apologetically. I look between him and David as they walk up to me.

“Everything okay?” I ask hesitantly as they stand in front of me.

“Harlan has some things for the drive home,” David says, his voice stoic and boss-like, but his eyes hinting at a softer side to his words.

“What, like snacks?”
