Briar’s POV
I frowned. "Are you… are we… really doing this right now?"
Lizbella didn’t move, she didn’t even blink. Just stood there, like stone, like maybe if she stayed still long enough this would all pass.
But it didn’t. The air in the room shifted. My skin prickled. My body knew before I did—something was wrong.
I noticed it. Bringing up the past, clenching the door. The beads of sweat on her forehead. Yeah, that wasn’t my friend.
I stepped forward, slowly, my face almost close to hers. "Liz, let me in."
She stiffened. "Briar, this is my house."
"Yeah, and my instincts are screaming that you are hiding something from me."
"It’s none of your business."
"The hell it isn’t." The words scraped out of my throat like broken glass, each syllable a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the wood between us. My fist hit the door frame hard enough to make the hinges
