Jason’s POV

Still, hearing her say it out loud stung in a way I hadn’t expected. I clenched my fists, leaning against the wall for support as I fought the urge to storm into the room and demand why I wasn’t enough. 

But I didn’t. I stayed rooted to the spot, listening, hoping, praying for something…anything…that would ease the ache in my chest.

Maddie’s voice cut through my thoughts, firm and unyielding. 

“Layla, I get it. First loves are hard to forget, but he’s not here anymore. Jason is. He’s the one holding your hand, the one loving you right now. Don’t you think he deserves a chance?”

I held my breath, waiting for Layla’s response. The silence stretched on, each second feeling like an eternity.

Finally, she spoke. 

“I think… I think I need to take it one step at a time. Right now, my focus is on this baby. Once I’ve given birth, I’ll try. I’ll try to give Jason the chance he deserves.”
