And then he’d walk out, taking Damien with him, leaving me alone with my secrets and my shame.
My chest tightened painfully. No. Please, God, no.
The door clicked open, and my whole body went rigid. I held my breath, waiting. Logan’s voice floated in, calm and light,
“Damien, don’t forget to take off your shoes.”
I blinked in disbelief. He sounded... normal. Not angry. Not suspicious. Just his usual, casual self.
Damien’s voice followed, cheerful and carefree. “Okay, Dad.”
I let out a shaky breath, my knees almost giving out beneath me. He didn’t tell him. Damien didn’t tell Logan. Relief crashed over me like a wave, my body sagging as the tension melted away.
I closed my eyes, swallowing the lump in my throat. I was safe. For now.
