“I’m managing,” I replied, sitting down beside him. “As you know, Liam is back and injured. I’ve been taking care of him.”
Tobias’s smile faded slightly. “You’re taking care of him? After everything he’s done to you?”
I sighed, looking down at my hands. “I know it sounds strange. But seeing him like that, I couldn’t just let him suffer. It’s complicated, Tobias.”
He placed a hand on my shoulder. “I understand. You have a kind heart, Maxine. Even after all the pain he’s caused, you still care. That’s what makes you different.”
