Chapter 22
I carefully turned around to face her while maintaining a focused gaze on her. Because she was expecting too much of me, my head was screaming bloody murder. Ophelia, on the other hand, appeared to be holding the infant with relative ease while beaming up at her.
My thoughts were racing through my head at a hundred miles per hour. The sudden awakening of long-forgotten instincts startled me. I was aware that giving it a name would lead to my developing an attachment to it.
Pearl, you are not like this at all. It's your humanity—the person you used to be. Let go of it.
"Do whatever it is you want to do with it! I scoffed and stormed off.
That was the very last time that I ever came anywhere near a kid. I was aware that it would bring out the human in me.
My humanity has been entombed in the most remote region of my psyche, and that is where it will remain until the day I die.
