Chapter 261. The Past
The following second was spent on me mustering up every last bit of strength I had so that I would not cry here in front of Jake. I didn't want to cause him any additional anxiety than he already had. I've already caused him more than enough trouble with the conflicts that happened in the ballroom.
The car came to a stop when we got to a sidewalk that was close to the water and overlooked the Manhattan Bridge, which took me by surprise. Jake threw his head back against the seat before I could ask him a question.
‘‘Shall we get out of the car? You’ll feel suffocated here. You need…’’ he paused. ‘‘Fresh air…’’
I watched as he got out of the car and opened the door for me. I let out a sigh as I stepped outside, reaching for his hand when he extended it to me, and inhaling the cool air of the night.
Even though it did not make the pain that was in my heart any less, the night breeze did feel good on my skin.
Jake took off his coat, and draped
