My eyes widened at the crowd in the room as I took in how pretty everyone looked and how attractive the hall was. The music stopped as I tightened the mask I had put on my face on my way down here. It was a masquerade party, and everyone appeared to be wearing a mask.

Lucas gripped my waist as we descended the stairs. I put a small smile on my face to avoid suspicion, as I felt the crowd hold its breath when Lucas stopped at the top of the stairs.

“I am grateful for your presence today at this celebration on such short notice. Eat, drink, and dance—for now, the Medici heir is growing and will be born in a few months,” he declared loudly as his voice echoed around the room.

I mean, this was a mafia community. They were just celebrating the birth of their next leader. That all made sense to me. I mean, rich people threw parties for whatever they felt like.
