Morning came, and I realized I hadn’t slept at all. Every time I closed my eyes, they filled with nightmares. After what I had just discovered about the Medici family, I didn’t want to deal with any of it anymore.
I wished I could get rid of everything I had now and go back to my old life in London, where my only worry was paying my bills and living without fear or death threats. The door opened, and I didn’t even look to see who it was, assuming it was Maria again, coming to pretend that she cared about me.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Medici, but you have a guest,” a voice said. I looked up—it was just a maid.
She must have noticed the way I narrowed my eyes at her, because she quickly added that she had knocked several times, but I hadn’t responded. I nodded at her.
“Who is the visitor?” I asked, not even curious, expecting Britney to come
