I’d taken the priestess’s vial in a desperate move to ensure that our packs survive against our enemies’ growing threat. But the price was a chilling void where my love for Everly should have been.

Or, at least, the expression of that love.

The feeling was still there, buried deep in my heart, but the ability to show it was gone.

And she’s been so cold lately and has been avoiding me.

I bought her a diamond ring and other expensive jewelry to show her that she was still precious to me.

I didn’t think I could face her yet, so I sent Owen to give her the gifts.

I waited anxiously for her to come to me. But she didn’t. Instead, Owen came back with the package and a note with Everly’s handwriting.

“What did she say?” I asked, my voice rough, as Owen entered the room.

He shook his head, looking so grim. “She didn’t take the gifts, Alpha. Not even a single one.”

“She refused them?” My voice cracked and I could feel my hear
