Chapter 9. Confrontation

Emily's POV

I put the phone to my ear, listening as it continued to ring. It rang for the third time without anybody picking it up, and I groaned inwardly, wondering what was wrong. Was he aware that I was calling and was choosing to ignore, or was it the other way? I knew I wouldn't be making this call if it weren't for my father's predicament.

The bills kept piling up, and we had no other options left. I knew that it would get even worse if I didn't do anything. I had to make this happen. Thankfully, he answered after a few more rings.

"Hello, this is Berton." He said from the other end.

"Hi, it's Emily." I said, trying to keep my voice steady. I didn't know how I was going to bring it up to him that I had had a change of mind. I felt embarrassed about it, even though I knew I would end up letting him know about it very soon. I was still deep in my thoughts when I heard his voice.
