I felt like crying when I saw Otis’s surprised face. His bruises hadn’t completely healed yet and were still yellowish on his cheekbones.
Caden looked at Otis for a second, and his face turned stoic until he cleared his throat and shoved his hands in his trousers pockets. “I’ll just go check on Catherine for a bit. You two can talk.”
He left without giving me a single look, and I didn’t know if I should thank him or be anxious that he let me talk with Otis alone. Was he upset? I felt he was upset. Maybe he wanted me to think about and choose between him and Otis? I wasn’t sure what to think.
I wasn’t sure what Caden wanted. And standing in the middle of the hallways with Otis staring at me with that apologetic look, I wasn’t sure what I wanted either.
The awkward atmosphere felt like heavy
