“Your father always helped us a lot,” said the soldier who was holding me, sporting a ridiculous little smile. “He always worked for our governor, to the extent that he was on the other side of the border. It was the way he found not to be executed if he was caught by one of ours.”

The soldier shrugged.
“Where do you think we find so many resources? There is cheap labor on the other side. We have a peace treaty with some supernatural creatures. Of course, your puppies did not agree with this treaty. They don’t want to serve the humans who created them, so they live the way they are, wild. If they agreed with our policies, they could come and go from our lands.”
I gave a debauched laugh.
