Chapter 4

POV: Kit Garrison

Her scent continued invading my senses. It was hard to concentrate o the dark road with her scent constantly wharfing through my nostrils without warning. It had the faint smell of Wild Jasmine and Berries. Probably Blueberries. It wasn't the aroma that captured my nerve endings but it was the feeling it left me with. It made me feel weak and vulnerable but safe. Humans had a scent that made them automatic prey but this human was different.

"Can you not stare at me?" She asked in a tone cold enough to freeze a tuna.

I still found it hard to believe I had listened to her insane plan on continuing the race even though we had won it was still a crazy thing to have done. I loved taking risks but she was on another level.

"I'll try," I said chuckling. "No promises though. You have a gorgeous face."

I turned to face the road and scream at myself in my head for what I had just said. Why the fuck had that come out?! I was only thinking about it. It was meant to stay a thought but I had gone and blurted it out to her like that. She must think I'm some kind of freak or worse, a maniac ax killer just as she had suspected.

"So...Lulu," I said in a weak attempt to try and break the awkward silence.

She didn't say a word. She just sat in my passenger's seat staring at me in what I could only assume was a death stare. I had the faint impression that I would freeze to an icy cone if I dared to face her. Her brown eyes scared me more than the tip of a sword should.

"Yeah," she said finally. Her tone was soft for the first time since pulling her out of the ditch.

I had to make sure she was the same woman sitting by my side and not a nice friendly doppelganger. She caught my look and asked, "What?"

"Nothing... You just sound, nice."

"So I don't sound nice or-"

"No. It's not that." I tried to explain. "You sound nice. I like the way you sound when you talk. It's just that, well. You-"

"I think you should stop talking and focus on the road," she said laughing.

The sound of her laughter was warm and somehow musical. I chuckled nervously.

"Do you do that a lot?" she asked turning to face me fully.

"Do what?"

"Blabber nervously."

I thought about it for a while. "No. Never. It must be you."

"Uh-huh." She said raising a brow at me. "Okay."

She turned back to face the road.

We sat in silence for a while as I moved my Jeep through the dark terrain heading for the town. The road was somewhat empty at that time of day. The numbers of cars that had past us since getting on the road were countable.

"How do you know you're going the right way?" She asked without looking at me.

I had naturally assumed she stayed in town. It hadn't crossed my mind to ask her which was an error on my part but then I was sure she was just trying to mess with my head. She would have complained a long time ago if I was taking her the wrong way. Or would she?

"Am I?" I asked.

She shrugged. "Meh."

I stopped the car and faced her. She kept her expression blank and I had a problem trying to decipher if she was being serious or not. Her heart was beating at a steady pace which confirmed my fear; she was a master at trickery. How could she joke about something like that in a time like this? Or was she serious?

"Let's do this. I'll answer you only if you can make me afraid." She said grinning at me. "I hate to see you torture yourself thinking about it."

I shook my head, "Stop it. I don't have time for games."

"Then we can as well stay here all night."

Her heartbeat didn't flutter. There were no signs that she was just bluffing me.

"I don't want to have to hurt you," I said meaning every word of it.

"I'm a big girl. Don't worry about me." She said grinning the same evil grin I was starting to dread. "Maybe you're just scared which is probably true. But then you look like you can handle yourself easily," she added repeating my words back at me.

She was baiting me which was obvious. I had no choice. Her brown eyes held mine as we stared at each other for a moment and I had the faint sensation I was walking into her soul.

"Alright then."

I put the engine on and gunned the ignition stepping on the pedal as hard as I could. The needle moved steadily and stopped at 80. She had a look of disappointment on her face which made me step a little bit more till it crossed 100.

We breezed through the road more like a death beam than a ranger that had two living people inside it. A crash from this speed would kill her instantly and might leave me incapacitated for a long time.

My heart slammed hard in my chest with the sound of two heavy pistons ramming into each other. My lungs were heavy as I tried to draw in oxygen easily but struggled.

She shook her head at me giving me a bored grim look. She was raving mad if she thought I was going to push past 120. She would have to lift out my very soul from my body and just it as a slingshot first before I would even consider something so dangerous.

"Are you serious?!" I yelled through all the rush of wind bashing into the car.

She shrugged with the same bored expression deepening.

There was a trailer moving logs on the other lane coming as fast as I was. On impulse, I switched lanes heading straight on for the trailer. I wasn't thinking anymore. My brain had gone into an indefinite hibernation mode.

The driver of the trailer blasted his horn obviously petrified with what I was about to do. I wasn't kidding myself. If we made an impact with the trailer, we would all die on the spot. All three of us.

The horn of the trailer filled the air with sound as I turned to stare at her face. She glanced at me yawning then focused on the passenger window. She was mad!

I cut to the left just on time as the trailer brushed past slamming us with a rush of wind that was enough to rip the Jeep apart.

I struggled to control my breathing. My hands squeezed the steering making my knuckles go as white as the clouds on a clear blue sunny day.

"You're fucking crazy," I said as I refrained from adding all the curse words that flooded my head.

She shrugged. I listened to her heartbeat and t my greatest shock, it was still slow and steady. That was impossible!

If that wasn't enough to get her riled up then nothing else can. Not even if I was stupid enough to transform and take a big chunk out of her guts and leave her there to bleed to death in shock.

I watched her for a minute letting the scent of Jasmine and berries swarm into me. She looked so innocent. So fragile yet she was dangerous.

I held her chin and turned her face so she could face me. The contact of my hand on her delicate face made something tighten in my chest. I felt a strange fuzzy feeling inside that was beyond logical explanation.

There was a slight change in her heartbeat and I would have missed it if I had been distracted.

I unlocked my seat belt and edged closer to her taking her face in my hands. Our lips touched. I pushed deeper into the kiss unsure of what I was doing or why I had done it. It just felt like the right thing to do at the time.

She drew from me pushing her tongue across my lips. I felt as if she was pulling my soul with her lips as I struggled to find my way back into the clutches of insanity. Just when I thought I was lost forever, she pulled away slowly.

"Wow." She said in a hollow voice. I noticed how her heart was racing very fast.

"We're going the right way."
