"Yes," she said, moving away from the window.
We both stood there, frozen, listening.
Another noise. Like someone stepping on gravel.
"Sarah," I whispered.
She came closer to me, and we both stared at the front door.
The doorknob started to turn.
My heart was pounding so hard I thought it might burst out of my chest.
The door was locked. They couldn't get in. We were safe.
But then I heard the sound of glass breaking from the kitchen.
Someone was in the house.
The sound of breaking glass from the kitchen seemed to echo through the entire house.
For a split second, neither Sarah nor I moved. We just stood there, frozen in shock and disbelief.
Then Sarah's entire demeanor change, it was like watching someone flip a switch.
The gentle mother who'd been playing with her kids moments ago vanished, replaced by someone harder, sharper, more dangerous.
