Zavian sneered, leveling Emmeline with a stern look. “Do you accept his apology?”

He was acting every bit the imposing judge, but Emmeline refused to be cowed by his commanding presence in that moment.

“Since he swallowed his pride to apologize in front of everyone, I’ll forgive him this time.”

She could barely muster her response above a hoarse mutter.

With that, Zavian released Richard’s shoulder. “This is a respectable neighborhood. You’d better mind your behavior from now on. Next time you raise a hand to her, a black eye will be the least of your concerns.”

“It won’t happen again.” Richard replied through gritted teeth. Seconds ticked by before he turned his glare back on Emmeline. “Can we go home now?”

Emmeline rose steadily to her feet and walked towards him with measured steps. “We should go.”

She paused beside Richard, sweeping her grateful gaze over each person in turn. “Thank you all for supporting me. I’ll never forget what you d
