Emmeline watched as Mrs. Winters made her way to the stand, her steps slow but resolute.

A flicker of guilt crossed her face. “I thought she hated me,” she admitted barely above a whisper. “I never realized she was looking out for me.”

Brody gave a knowing nod. “Turns out she doesn’t.”

Emmeline’s brows knitted together. “What happened with Mrs. Chen? I thought she was supposed to testify.”

“She had a health emergency and was admitted to the hospital,” Brody explained. “She’s recuperating, so she couldn’t make it.” He leaned in slightly. “I had to reach out to other neighbors willing to step up. Well... someone else did.”

Emmeline didn’t have to ask who. Zavian. He had come through for her time and time again.

The room fell silent as Mrs. Winters raised her right hand and swore to tell the truth.
