“I thought that was the reason she came,” Dr. Ross inhaled deeply before continuing with a hint of pity in her voice. “But she asked to undergo a virginity test. My first thought was that she had been assaulted or there had been an attempt. When I shared my concerns with her, I learned that she had been married for six months.”
Emmeline peeked at Richard and saw him rubbing his fingers nervously on the table’s surface. His usual arrogant demeanor had vanished, replaced by the anxious movements of someone who knew his constructed façade was about to crumble. A thin sheen of perspiration had appeared on his forehead despite the courtroom’s cool temperature, and the confident smile that had characterized his earlier testimony was nowhere to be seen.
Yuna leaned toward him and whispered urgently, but Richard seemed beyond hearing. His focus was entirely internal as though calculating the damage about to be inflicted on his cultivated image.
