Chapter 385
Emmeline slid into the leather seat. As soon as she was settled, Emile quickly circled the car and dropped into the driver’s seat.
The silence between them stretched uncomfortably as he inserted the key into the ignition but didn’t immediately start the car.
Emmeline gathered her courage to ask the question that had been weighing on her mind since they left the courthouse.
“Are you going to tell our parents about what happened?” Her voice came out smaller than she intended, betraying her nervousness.
“I won’t tell them for two reasons, and neither has anything to do with you.” Emile answered this time, though his eyes remained fixed on the windshield.
Then he turned to face her, his gaze cold and distant. “The news might give one of them a heart attack, and because I won’t be spared from their criticism.” A bitter smile twisted his lips. “They’ll relish the chance to gloat over me for standing by you.”
