Eleanor’s approval of the plan felt like another betrayal to Emmeline. This was the first time she’d seen her mother smile contentedly since she’d returned home.
“Actually, that’s exactly what I was thinking,” Eleanor continued, warming to the idea, “But I was afraid to suggest it in case you took it the wrong way. It’s better for you to stay away from Riverwalk for a while until everyone forgets what happened between you and Richard.”
She stepped closer to Emmeline and patted her shoulder lightly. The gesture was more condescending than comforting. “It will be convenient for you and for us.”
Charles nodded in agreement, stroking his chin thoughtfully. “I agree with your mother. You’ll feel more comfortable in a place where no one knows you.”
