Chapter 4. Secret

Nina’s POV

I took a deep breath and walked out of Leo’s company, stopping a taxi almost immediately. Slowly, I turned and glanced at his company one last time, memories of what had transpired between me, Leo, and May washing over me like a wave. I averted my gaze from the company and entered the taxi. Almost immediately, the taxi drove off from the company’s premises.

Throughout the drive back to Leo’s house, I felt empty and was deep in thought. Subconsciously, a single tear fell down my cheeks, and I immediately wiped it off with the back of my palm. I didn’t want anyone asking me any questions or pitying me. I could not believe that my Leo, the love of my life, could do such a thing to me.

After about thirty minutes of driving, we later got to the mansion and the taxi stopped. I got down, settled the driver and he drove off.

Slowly, I spun my heels and looked up at the mansion, a wave of nostalgic memories washing over me. I could remember the wonderful times I and Leo had together in this mansion, the lovely words he always whispered into my ears, everything that had happened today all seemed like a bad dream I really wished to wake up from but had no idea how to.

Taking a deep breath, I lifted my heavy legs and began walking towards the mansion. As I got to the door, I worked on the keys and opened it before slowly twisting the door knob.

I took a step into the mansion and closed the door behind me. My eyes scanned the now cold house; this was the place where Leo and I had built our relationship. I leaned on the door and bit down on my lower lip to suppress the urge to burst into tears. But I was too overwhelmed with emotions, and without fighting it again, I crashed onto the cold floor and yelled out with pain, my voice echoing through the mansion.

The pain in my voice was obvious, tears streamed down my cheeks, my lips quavering. Never in my life have I ever felt an emotion as strong as this. I had not experienced heartbreak before… so this was what it felt like?

After what felt like an eternity of crying, I became tired. My eyes were too heavy and weak to produce more tears. I had no choice but to lift myself up and dry my face with my palms.

I began taking slow strides towards the room Leo and I shared. Before getting to the room, I passed the kitchen and instantly came to a halt at the doorstep the moment my eyes met with the food I had prepared for our anniversary today.

Slowly, I entered the kitchen and strode towards the table I had neatly prepared beside the window. I then reached out and opened the plate of food; it was already cold, begging to be eaten.

A bittersweet smile spread across my lips. I imagined Leo sitting down and happily enjoying our anniversary and the food I had prepared. But again, much to my disappointment, I didn’t think that would never happen again. Leo had made it clear that he never loved me; he didn’t even remember our anniversary today.

My grip on the plate tightened as anger flashed through my eyes. I closed the food, spun my heels, and walked out of the kitchen straight to my room.

Once I was in my room, I crashed onto the bed and burst into fresh tears. I didn’t know how to express the pain I felt right now. How did my life come to this?!

I touched my pocket and could hear the jingle of something. Curiously, I brought it out and realized it was the bracelet I had made for him. Staring at it in my hands, a single year fell down my cheeks. I tossed the bracelet to a corner on the bed; I had no use for it anymore.

Why could Leo not love me just like he loved May?! I had been with him for one whole year! May was a bitch, a very jealous, devious bitch!

My mind drifted back to when May and I were still kids. She had always been so jealous of everything I literally had! After my mother died, my father got married to May’s mother and ever since then, she has always been the center of attraction, the star child of the family.

Everyone seemed to love her and adore her. Even my father, who literally promised my mother on her deathbed to protect me and love me forever, shifted all his love and attention towards May, thereby neglecting me.

All because of May, I grew up without the love and support of my father. May had always been in a competition with me but I didn’t think so much about that because I saw her as my sister and her jealousy as harmless. Never in my mind did I ever imagine she would take it to the next level to the point of stealing my man!

Slowly, I lifted my head up and stared at my wardrobe, my hands clenching the duvet with anger.

I had made up my mind: I was going to leave Leo’s house for good! Since he didn’t want me, I was not going to force myself on him. As much as I loved him, I was not going to stoop so low to begging him to love me or take me back into his warmth.

With anger blazing through my eyes, I stood up from the bed and walked towards the wardrobe. As soon as I got near, I opened it, got my boxes and began packing my belongings.

Just then, I noticed a brown file tucked in a corner in the wardrobe. I furrowed my brows with confusion, my curiosity piqued. What the hell was that?

My curiosity got the best of me, so I grabbed the file, opened it without any hesitation, and brought out the documents.

What the hell was this? As I scanned through the document, I realized something was off. Although it belonged to Leo, it had detailed information concerning a rival company.

Just then, realization dawned on me. The file in my hand was a lethal weapon I could use to exact revenge on Leo!

“Hmm…” I hummed the corners of my lips, curving into a mischievous smirk. “Revenge is best served hot, isn’t it?”
