Scarlet stood with her arms crossed over her chest in front of his grandfather. She had gone to him to find out more about where her father was, but she could tell from the way he was looking at her that he was thinking about something else.

"Scarlet," he said in a low, serious voice. "I have information on your father. But there is something I want in return."

The beat in Scarlet's heart skipped. She had been looking for her father for weeks but had not found him yet. She asked, "What do you want?" in a voice that was barely above a whisper.
