CC was watching Troy, saw him putting the pieces together, figuring her out like he always did. What he was asking for was proving more difficult for her than she knew it would be. She’d be giving up the way he read to her when she was scared, the way he kept her by his side no matter what until he couldn’t stand it anymore, until he feared for her life, the little tricks they played on each other. Their secret language that was silence, watching and observing so as not to be outdone. Only none of that was hers to give up anymore. They ended a long time ago. So why couldn’t she give it to him?
He sat down to the table filled with slices of cake and opened his mouth obediently for every fork full of cake.
“I’m in love with her Caroline. I wouldn’t be asking if I wasn’t.”
