No resistance. No defiance. Nothing at all. Her eyes remained unmoved. Stone cold. And he? Aaron remained unable to put Keira down. He felt himself fight for the control that was expected of him, part of becoming a king. Whether he wanted to or not, he did have to put her down.

But he didn’t become a king. He didn’t marry the right woman. And as it turned out, it was okay, because he didn’t want it anymore. Maybe he never really did. Back then he wasn’t running the show. Becoming crown prince, his engagement to Zoey, it was all scripted for him by his parents. Just shy of a year later, he wound up in a similar situation with Aria, ready to marry a woman who didn’t love him for a crown.

He stared at her with what he imagined must have been crazy eyes, but the lifeless look in her own stayed. She didn’t move. Waited quietly on him as his lips neared her neck, shallow impatient breaths on her skin.
