They were in the Babalolas’ backyard awaiting their parent’s return since they hadn’t met them at home that evening. Though Helen had informed both of them to make sure they came around that day and when they called her, Their mother had told them that they were part of the committee the church had appointed to go pay a condolence visit to the widow of one of their brethren who had just died.
So here they were waiting for them to get back, and Tomiwa had decided to bring up the issue even though she could see that Bernard was not really in the mood for conversation as he had been replying to her mostly with monosyllabic words since she had been trying to engage him in small talk.
