Marissa's nostalgia for the familiarity of her current situation was bittersweet. She could remember being here before and how that had all ended. She was determined that she would come out on the other end this time around smelling like roses.

There would be no panic on a day that was supposed to be one of her best.

There would be no blood.

There would be no pain or heartache.

On her day.

All these were the thoughts going through Marissa’s mind as she got turned, tucked, and primped.

She sighed in mock exasperation as she rolled her eyes heavenward and looked at Henrietta and Tomiwa, who were standing guard over her, allegedly so she wouldn’t run out during her fitting so she could go sell some clothes. That had been Henrietta’s exact word when Marissa had protested earlier.

The two of them had waylaid her in her shop, told her girls to take care of the shop, and they had whisked her away since then. They had gone in and out of shops
