Chapter 14
He was going to tell me, I realized. He was going to talk about it; he even opened his mouth to do so, but just as he was about to say the words, something distracted him and he turned his gaze toward the stairs. I did the same, distracted, and saw Mirko on the mezzanine with the baby in his arms. Then her little voice reached me; she spoke with annoying little snores. His father stood up immediately, and I could do nothing but sigh with some disappointment. I immediately felt bad about it. I mean, why was I so eager to interfere in his life?
Why did I care so much?
For the children, of course.
Mirko went down the stairs, and Ivan went toward him.
“Dad, my little sister got dirty.”
“Okay, give her to me and go get dressed. Thanks for bringing her, champion.”
“Good morning, Mrs. Johanna,” the boy greeted me, tired.
I couldn’t help but smile at him and also get up from the couch. I left the cup and the toast on the table.
