Chapter 138
I pressed the button on the recorder to stop it for a moment, and although I didn’t want to, a growl crept into my throat:
“You can stop pretending. I know you’re awake.”
And it wasn’t exactly thanks to my “super-senses”; she was shaking like a leaf under my arm. She moved slowly, just enough to raise her head and fix me with that silver-gray look, hurtful and accusatory, between strands of messy black hair. A chill ran through me; now I was very upset.
“He escaped,” she hissed, through clenched teeth. “He was free, and you didn’t tell me?”
“Let me finish.”
Johanna elbowed me in the ribs intentionally and left my side until she got off the bed. She walked away from me before I could reach out and touch her. For being eight months pregnant, she was very fast.
“I can’t believe this. I can’t believe you lied to me,” she murmured, furious.
