Ronan’s POV
Kaien gagged as we stepped over the corpses. He hadn’t seen anything like this before—never war, never this level of bloodshed. I tightened my grip on my sword’s hilt and pressed forward. Noctyr had already swept through the castle, cutting down the last of the defenders. Now we were outside, blade to blade with any who remained, while Valeria’s non-shifter wolves flanked us, snarling through the carnage.
Everywhere I looked, bodies lay in heaps—wolves, vampires, wolves turned human. Some were ours, but most belonged to my mother’s army. In that moment I understood why the council had refused to aid us against her supernatural forces. She had bent their will with her power, making certain they opposed my plea. She’d known exactly what she was doing.
We could win each skirmish, but they kept coming, multiplying in an endless wave. Her choice of allies was cruelly brilliant.
“I have to find Seris!” I shouted to Kaien, who was locked in combat
