Chapter 284. A Knock at the Door
Lara joins him in the kitchen, looking tired but composed. She smiles at the sight of Carter flipping pancakes, the aroma of coffee filling the room. “You’re spoiling us,” she says, her voice warm with appreciation.
Carter chuckles, glancing over his shoulder at her. “Just trying to make things a little easier,” he replies, placing a stack of pancakes on a plate. “How did the boys sleep?”
“Better than I expected,” Lara admits, pouring herself a cup of coffee. “I think they’re still processing everything, but they’re holding up.”
Carter nods, understanding the unspoken fear in her words. “those kids are resilient,” he says, offering her a reassuring smile. “But it’s okay if they need time. If you need time.”
Lara meets his gaze, grateful for his understanding. “Thank you, Carter,” she says softly. “For being here. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“You don’t always have to thank me, woman,” Carter replies, his tone sincere. “We’re in this together.”
