Carter, who has been watching her from the kitchen doorway, finally steps into the room. His presence is reassuring, solid.

She nods, grateful for the quiet moment. It’s been a long day—too long—and the thought of a few hours of solitude is almost too good to be true. She leans back in her chair, feeling the weight of exhaustion settle into her bones.
“I’m going to take a bath,” she says after a while, her voice thick with fatigue.
