Chapter 20
The man suddenly turned and bent down, and John looked at him for a moment in astonishment, then turned and went to a chair in the corner of a pensioner behind one of the doors and proceeded to take notes on his research among the papyri, but his thoughts refused to return to their natural groove and they were running on the mysterious attendant with a face like a sphinx The parchment flogged John said to himself
“Where have you seen such eyes? There is something Syrian about them, something reptilian there is the nectatian membrane of snakes,”
Then he re-thought himself and his studies of zoology
"It gives a shimmering effect. But there was something else here. There was a feeling of strength and wisdom (that's why I read it) and sheer tiredness and indescribable despair. It might all be a fantasy, but I've never had such a strong impression."
Then John said to himself again, "I have to take another look at them!"
