The manner in which the two young women looked at one another struck me. I think I was so accustomed to assessing the character of witnesses in my mind and forming judgements based on their unconscious actions and manner of carrying themselves that the habit extended to my life outside as well as inside the courthouse. At this moment in my life, anything that interested me, including Miss Trelawney, interested me; and as she was struck by the newcomer, I instinctively weighed her also, and by comparing the two, I somehow seemed to have acquired a new acquaintance with Mrs. Trelawney.
