Chapter 8
I thought it was a superfluous thing, unless it was untrue in spirit. When I told him his hour was up and that he might go to bed till I called him at six o'clock, he seemed relaxed and went with pleasure, turned at the door, returned to me, and said in a whisper:
"I sleep a little, and I'll have my pistols with me, and my head won't feel so heavy when I get rid of this mummy smell."
He also shared my sleepy experience with me!
I asked the nurse if she wanted anything, and I noticed she had a vinaigrette on her lap. No doubt she also felt some influence on me.
She said she had everything she needed, but if she wanted anything, she would tell me right away. I wanted to keep her from noticing my respirator, so I went over to the chair in the shade with her back to me. Here, I put it on softly and made myself comfortable.
For a long time, I sat and thought and thought. It was a wild mixture of thoughts, as might have been expected
