I found myself pacing through a living room I’d never seen before, the high-backed armchairs and polished oak coffee table glaring at me with cold unfamiliarity. Only yesterday, I’d noticed the bruise on Elizabeth’s cheek, and her casual dismissal when she told me to mind my own business had left me reeling. Shocked that she believed I would simply relent, I refused to let it go. There was no way I would walk away without answers.
The moment I caught her scent today, every question began to crystallize. She had tried to scrub away his presence, but I know her unique fragrance too well. Even the slightest alteration stood out, like a discordant note in an otherwise perfect melody. That tang of soap and mint clashed with something darker—Noah. I recognized his scent instantly. What I still didn’t understand was why he’d endangered her.
