“This is my lovely granddaughter. Isn’t she just gorgeous?”

Emery and I maintained our polite smiles as Grandma Adeline introduced her to another group of her friends. They were all ladies over fifty, well-groomed, and shiny pearl necklaces adorned their necks and exquisite diamonds. They beamed as Adeline went on and on about my outward beauty.

This wasn’t the family dinner I was expecting. I thought it would be intimate, quiet and awkward. Instead, there were a lot of dignitaries and businessmen. It gave me a glimpse of what my new family was about.
