I was running out of options.
Sitting in my office, staring at the stack of reports scattered across my desk, I felt the weight of frustration settling deeper with every passing minute. Nothing I had followed so far had led anywhere useful. Every lead on Evelyn had either dried up or looped back into itself like a closed circle I couldn’t break.
It was like chasing something that didn’t want to be found.
Or worse, something that knew exactly how to stay hidden.
I ran a hand through my hair, jaw tightening as I leaned back in my chair. There had to be another angle. If I couldn’t reach Evelyn directly, then I needed to approach it differently.
Closer.
More personal.
