Sophia's POV

Derick studied me a long moment, his blue eyes sharp enough that I felt every hesitation before I even voiced it. “How did Miranda help you get a job there?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” I said, shrugging. “I just thought she knew someone who knows the owner of the shop.”

He scoffed. “Miranda is a mere human forbidden child. She has no power among the werewolves. And how could she even have such connection?”

I didn’t have an answer for that. I’d assumed, without ever really questioning it, that Miranda’s connections had simply come from somewhere convenient, and hearing it laid out so plainly made the whole arrangement feel suddenly much less trustworthy than it had a few weeks earlier.
