Nathan, standing near the door, heard this.
“What do you mean, Doctor? Earlier, you said Grandma had a heart attack?”
The doctor looked confused. “We found no evidence of that. In fact, she’s very stable.”
Nathan slowly turned to look at his mother and grandmother, who were now sitting upright in bed. Their gazes met briefly—awkwardly.
Nathan furrowed his brow. “Grandma… Mom… Was this all just a charade?”
Grandma looked at Nathan dramatically. “We just wanted you to stay close for now. Elena’s company has been stressing you out.”
Nathan took a step back. “You—you lied to me?”
Sonia approached him. “Son, this is for your own good. While Elena is in Canada, you should try to get closer to Chintya.”
Nathan took a deep breath, trying to calm himself.
“And who came up with this idea?” he asked sharply.
Silence. But Nathan saw something in his mother’s eyes—doubt. He knew the answer immediately.
