Nathan nodded once. “I’ve been carrying that responsibility since they were born.”
Chintya clenched her fists, holding back her anger. She bowed in a fake gesture of respect, then stepped back. Some guests began mingling again, the atmosphere slowly returning to normal, though tension still lingered in the air.
Tamara approached Nathan. “Everything okay?”
“Not yet,” Nathan whispered, staring at the baby crib. “But at least tonight, Ellyn and Edward are with the family who truly loves them.”
In the corner of the room, Grandmother Clara sat back down, sipping her iced tea. Her face looked tired. Sonia sat beside her, holding her mother’s hand.
“Mom,” Sonia whispered, “trust us. Elena will wake up, and everything will be okay.”
The old woman didn’t respond, only staring off into the distance—toward the two peaceful babies in the crib.
“Why don’t you just die, Elena!” Chintya thought to herself.
